Brainy Pool left this review about The Cleveland Arms

Just a short skip from Port Sunlight village brings you to this salt of the earth high street pub. Quite a basic, typical small community pub interior. Pensioners around the bar enjoying a jolly afternoon and playing Irish songs on the jukebox, whilst the dartboard and pool table were both in constant use. Both the customers and barmaid were exceptionally welcoming and interested in our reasons for visiting. And the beer selection has now been expanded to three plus a cider - quality of the Trappers Hat was excellent. They also had a stout from Salopian which I wasn’t able to try. It may be a bit basic for some but I really liked this pub for the beer and friendly welcome.

There's really only here and the local Wetherspoon's where you can get real ale in New Ferry. It's a fairly desolate place for beer drinkers. The Cleveland Arms is located along the main pedestrianised street through New Ferry, a road that was decimated by a huge gas explosion a few years back. Two areas of wasteland nearby bear testimony to the fateful evening when the pub was shook and severely damaged.

It's back to being a basic no-frills locals boozer. I was initially greeted with a bit of scepticism from the barmaid, who obviously didn't recognise me. But she soon turned out to be fairly friendly. A few old boys were propping up the bar, which had a couple of handpulls. One sports Trapper's Hat. The other has the guest beer, which on this occasion was Clogwyn Gold.

UPDATE: Much improved after refurbishment a few years ago. 2 real ales available.

9/12/15:
Situated on a pedestrianised street this is a pretty standard pub. Can be rough as arseholes on many occasions and if you like boxing you may see a title bout now and again. It apparently does/did sell real ale but none was on on my short visit.
