Very basic locals boozer in St Helens with Wigan Brewhouse beers. It was one of those pubs where everything and everybody stops when strangers walk in.

The bar itself is off to the right as you enter, with a seating area to the left and further seating on the other side of the bar. Junction & Zappa were the 2 ales. A CAMRA discount is offered. I guess having some Wigan Brewhouse beers makes this a good alternative to other bars in St Helens town centre, but it's not exactly a destination venue and really didn't feel very welcoming. It's very handy for St Helens Central station though.

A surprise addition to the Good Beer Guide this year, it remains quite a basic two sided pub, not for the faint hearted but very friendly. The ale is now much improved with three local ales. I enjoyed Wigan Brewhouse’s Old Boston and California, both £2.50 a pint with the CAMRA discount. (thought this would be a controversial choice of brewery in St Helens!)

a very pleasant two sided pub and one of the good ones in St Helens. just the one real ale on which I swerved in favour of Erdinger. A popular rugby league (ie. proper rugby) pub with a very friendly jovial atmosphere. Shame about the Metallica crap favoured on the jukebox.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The George

A good sized two roomed pub with a lounge and bar side. The interior in here is very much non descript, the word drab is more apt. We went into the bar side on the left, where there was a further larger room with a pool table and a gaming machine. The bar hosted three handpumps with one in use, serving Wigan Brew House Casino Pale 3.9%. It was average and didn't warrant a second glass. The young barman wasn't very welcoming and I felt as though we were a nuisance even bothering to call in. It turned out him and his pal were more interested in playing the slot machine in the adjoining room. If the pub had a couple of more beer choices and better staff, I would have had a better experience.

We did not have such a favourable impression of the George as the last reviewer, but then we were on a real ale crawl so the presence of just one rather moderate beer on hand pump was a bit of a downer. Wigan Brewhouse Casino was the beer - I can't remember (and my notes made at the time don't help) whether it was in this pub or the Royal Alfred that we left our glasses unfinished. Probably the latter, but we didn't think much of this one either.

Friendly enough pub near to Central station. Two roomed pub with St Helens Rugby League Club memorabilia adorning the walls. One real ale was on from Ramsbottom at the time. Local characters enjoying an afternoon session to be found velcroed to the bar. Had a flyer advertising the selling of "Lancashire" badges. Tough titty, you're in Merseyside, deal with it.
