The heritage interior of Peter Kavanaghs includes a serving counter up the right over which some pots, pans and other quirky odds and sods hang. Opposite the counter to the left are some split-level brown banquettes as well as an old piano and at the rear of the bar is a snug with banquettes, a large green tiled fireplace and round tables with built in ashtrays, that obviously haven’t been used for a long time, cough. There’s what looks like a large radio in the corner and more smaller radios sit on shelves around this snug, and of course more quirky stuff hangs from the ceiling. There’s also seating in the front bay that is prominent from the outside and stained glass and wood carvings can be found throughout. During a recent bank holiday Monday evening visit premium keg was available alongside Fosters and the four hand pumps were drawing Theakston’s Hairy Bikers, GK Abbot Ale, TT Landlord and Hogs Back Brewery’s Surrey Nirvana. This place is worth the extra walk from the main drag, especially for fans of historic pub interiors.

Every time I go to Liverpool, I fall in love with a new pub. This one won today's fondness.
Exactly what I look for in a pub. Rooms to explore. Period decoration. Interesting nick nacks. Deep personalisation from Peter himself and Rita - who from my limited research is Liverpools oldest landlady.
Thank god they allow photos to be taken.
Good Beer Guide entry and TT Landlord in super condition. So really, its got it all.
And live music on a Saturday.

A beautiful heritage interior - worth every one of its three stars on Camra's inventory. There are two sets of two hand pumps, with Landlord and Abbot to the left and a couple of guests to the right. One was from Salopian and the other Black Sheep. I went for the Black Sheep Blonde, which was in very good condition (NBSS 4) and probably the best beer that I can recall drinking in the blonde category. I went and sat in the small room to the left of the bar, which has some amazing carved figures around the fireplace, and some rather faded paintings on the walls. The barman told me they were having to put prices up this week, but as this meant that my Black Sheep would have been £2 instead of £1.95, I said that I wasn't particularly bothered. (The Landlord and Abbot are going up by rather more, it seems.)

Peter Kavanagh's in a fine side street pub that is located some way out of the city centre. However, if you are making the effort to get out to the Philharmonic and to admire that pub's period features, it would be well worth your while making the extra 10-minute walk to this pub too.
Whilst it doesn't have the popularity and panache of the Philharmonic, some of the features here are still worthy of merit. A room at the front of the pub and another to the rear both have excellent murals. The dim lighting helps create a very different atmosphere to the Philharmonic, but the murals are impressive.
A further large room adjacent to the bar contains all kind of knick knacks to peruse. Similarly the corridor connecting the bar itself with all of the other rooms also contains items of interest.
The landlady has been here for 30-odd years, whist the friendly barman we encountered had also been working here for over 20 years and was knowledgeable about the history of the pub.
The number of handpulls has now been reduced to 3. On our visit, these were clipped with Salopian Hop Twister & Shropshire Gold & Greene King Abbot. This is probably a good thing, as I've never ever found this pub busy. My Hop Twister was in good condition and certainly better than beers I've had in the past here. I do wonder how the pub survives though.

Situated in the Georgian Quarter, this pub has a wonderful interior worthy of close inspection.Named after a longstanding landlord who died in 1950,it's quirky to boot. There is lots of wood panelling and has a central corridor with the bar, while the front snug to the right of the entrance has a curved banquette, wall murals depicting some humourous scenes and a collection of musical instruments hanging from the ceiling. The tables here all have inlaid ashtrays ,not usable these days but a design feature. There is a door to the bar but no counter. On the other side of the serving bar is a back lounge ,descrete but being used by the publican as a quiet seating for his elderly female relative, with some shopping recently delivered.
Opposite the bar there is a two level lounge with some impressive banquettes and chandeliers.Live music is a feature here, although with it's modest interior maybe this will be small scale. There are no flatscreens, muzak or machines so a very authentic feel.
There were 5 handpumps working on my trip serving GK Abbott,Lees Big Bad Wolf,Wadworth Dirty Rucker,Tall Ships Waterloo Sunset and Rock the Boat (NBSS 2.5,it failed to rock my boat). This wasn't a great line up with several undistinguished brewers wares on display which was a fly in the ointment.Worth a one pint stop to see the interior and very genuine boozer atmosphere.

Enjoyed our visit to this 2019 Good Beer Guide pub with it's rooms that are so full of all sorts from radios to bikes and chamber pots. Decent beer choice and we selected Peerless Down Under and Big Bog Hinky Pink, both of which were fine. Other beers were Flying Monk Mighty Monk and Big Bog WPA.

the beer choice is as good as it needs to be, the joy here is in the multiple room classic interior, a destination drinkers pub par excellence. I tried twice to find it without a map and failed spectacularly, nice to finally drink a pint here although it was pretty dead on a Wednesday afternoon.

Just in case you didn't know, this pub is named after Peter Kavanagh, who was licensee for over 50 years until his death in 1950. It is on CAMRA's National Inventory of pubs with historic interiors. This pub is thankfully unchanged since Pubsignman's visit a few years ago; in fact I don't think that it's changed much since Peter Kavanagh's day. The extravagant murals in the two separate rooms on the right are especially interesting. The original pub has been extended into adjoining properties over the years, creating the carpeted lounge and raised area on the left.
The mass of bric a brac is still there, which I always think makes a pub more interesting. The most unusual for me was the crocodile skin; or maybe the penny farthing bicycle. There were five real ales, and when one went off it was swiftly replaced by another one, which is a good management practice in my book.
Although this pub is somewhat off the beaten track, it really is worth the effort of seeking out. It's a top pub.

The view of the rich dark, eccentrically decorated interior shown on "View Inside" of Peter Kavanaghs has tempted me to travel there and see it very soon.
