Amazing transformation from the original Penny Farthing pub, which I never ventured into for various reasons. This new urban style bar is always quite busy on my couple of visits, with customers seated both inside and out, taking advantage of the exterior patio area. There is a first floor in here, which is mainly set out for dining. Unfortunately no cask ale on my last couple of visits.

After a closure this place has been transformed and is now open as The Courtyard. Gone is the downtrodden interior and gone are the deadheads that used to frequent. Its now a two-floored modern bar. The upstairs is a dining area and bar and the downstairs is a modern, if plain, bar. To the side is a enclosed outside area. There are 4 handpumps on the bar with today's selection being Liverpool Organic Bier Head, Honey Blonde and 24 Carat Gold plus a Wadsworth beer Dray Bells. Keg offerings include Amstel, Birra Moretti, Heineken and Guinness. Whilst its not really my cup of tea it is a billion times better than its previous incarnation.

Re-opened, done up, upstairs open, same old scallies and weird people.

Old Boots left this review about The New Penny Farthing
I didn’t think pubs like this still existed, a corridor of formica, sticky tables and a stickier threadbare carpet, drab wallpaper with a few photos of ancient film stars and old Liverpool that had seen better days, a faint toilet smell noticable on entering. Customer mix of young chavs and scallies with some eccentric looking pensioners surrounded by plastic bags. The tattooed barmaid offers a choice of standard UK kegs although the prices were fairly low. I sat in the corner trying to look unobtrusive, just under the window with the bullet hole in it. Very handy for St John's Bus Station.
