A classic old street corner boozer with high Lincrusta style ceilings and gold painted elaborate cornices. The main area around the bar was obviously once two rooms, still evidenced by the doors. There does however remain another separate room to the rear. Back to back fireplaces, wood flooring but with a tiled area around the bar, seating is of a regular type at small tables. The TV has Sky Sports News on mute.
A reasonable beer range, not able to compete with next door but one however, Landlord, Robinson's Dizzy Blonde, Rev James, Red Star Formby IPA (£3.00), Salopian Darwin's Original and Neptune Riptide. Food served, burgers from £8, Scouse with beetroot and cut bread £6.
A nice honest old school pub with a decent choice of ales.

Though it can't compete with the variety of real ale available in the nearby Ship it does now have a better selection than the last few years.

Nicely restored after that horrible make over of a few years back but the beer still needs work my Liverpool Organic 24 Caret Gold was flat, warmish and full of diactyl.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Excelsior
Not as comprehensive with its ales on offer as its next door neighbour. One thing you will find is that whatever ales they do have on are in great shape. Four ales on handpump on this visit, I went for the Robinsons Dizzy Blonde. Another plus is the toilets are decent, unlike it's neighbour. This is a decent pub where you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere. You will see a few tickers walking in and out.

Recently refurbished pub almost next door to the Ship & Mitre. It's very smart in here now and has a decent food offering. The bar is straight in front of you if you enter from Dale Street although there is a side entrance as well. The rear room is nicely decorated and has some interesting prints on the walls. There are 3 large TV screens and football is advertised, they also have occasional live music nights. There are 6 handpumps on the bar serving TT Landlord & Deuchars plus changing guests, one of which is usually from Adnams. Sadly I can't remember what ale I had in here, but I do remember it was well kept. It's a newcomer in the CAMRA GBG2013. Worth a call in if you're on the Dale Street crawl now.

Confirmed as open on a PUG day out in Liverpool, but we didn't have time to go in. The front bar seems to have been redecorated in a more pub like fashion and I spotted two handpumps one with Deuchars.

Refurbished in summer 2009, there are the remains of a magnificent victorian interior in the back bar – classy ceilings, dark wood and the original lincrusta - however the smaller front bar is a bit of a mess, yankee diner styled perhaps? It certainly lacks any charm. In the right hands this could be a great addition to the Dale Street circuit, however it's not a pub that hits the mark and is likely to suffer with nearby competition like the Ship & Mitre, The Vernon, Dr Duncan's and the Okell's pubs up the road. There are half a dozen handpumps in the large bar, Betwixt Sunlight was the only ale on any of the pumps, some with clips reversed, some without clips, when I last visited; also the bored staff were very busy watching football with the commentary in foreign.
