This is the pub made famous – or more accurately infamous – when Ronnie Kray shot George Cornell here back in 1966. I suppose that calling Ronnie Kray a “fat p**f” wouldn’t do your life expectancy any favours. I have to say that the infamy continues to this day, when I was charged £2.50 for a half of Bombardier. Apparently a pint is £4. And I made sure that it was no mistake. These are excessive prices, to put it mildly. The other beers on were Old Speckled Hen and Courage Best.
It’s had at least one makeover since the Krays’ heyday. It’s now bare-boarded with mainly solid wood furnishings – there is a complete absence of upholstery. The room itself is not too bad. The furnishing are OK if not particularly comfortable, and the room continues round to the back of the servery on the left, to an area with a pool table and a pinball machine (Amazing Spiderman). But nothing would induce me to return to a pub that so blatantly rips off its customers.
