This Victorian back street pub has been renovated inside and converted to form a single large bar, bare boarded, which serves as a local as well as an entertainment venue. It’s owned by Greene King. They host regular quizzes, open mic, curry and sports nights, but apart from that it’s a bit too quiet. We didn’t feel particularly welcome, the barman was in his own world and unwilling to communicate other than by grunting. Ales on were Abbott, GK IPA, Black Sheep and a blond beer whose provenance I forgot to record. I don’t feel inclined to return.

I like The Alma very much, when I was last there, if my memory serves me correctly, it had a fish in a Telephone Box and on the wall a signed photograph of Sid James. It also serves delicious tapas. This ticks many boxes and scores highly.
