Part of a varied triumvirate along with Lacey Green's Black Horse and Whip Inn, this has seen a couple of changes of ownership since the last review, but is currently in a period of stability and treading the fine line between appeasing both drinkers and diners. Three local ales helped - Rebellion IPA, XT 13 and Tring Witch, augmented by the ubiquitous Sharp's Doom Bar. Rebellion Lager was also available on a keg tap. Of note is the "Rupert Brooke Room" - a small, cosy room immediately to your left on entry which has a "Ring the Bull" string and hoop hanging from the ceiling along with requisite hook on one of the walls. A visit here a couple of years ago saw my son (after half-an-hour's worth of attempts) nail this again and again.

This pub is OK. An interesting and varied interior from a cosy snug at the front to a conservatory at the back. Though there's the usual gastro pretensions on the food front, not surprising considering the area, all that is kept separate from the pub side of things and very pubby it remains, refurbishments have been sympathetic. Nice range of beers, we stuck to the excellent Brakspear's due to driving but there's something for everyone in this GBG listed house. Indeed the GBG satnav file lead us here from a somewhat underwhelming and drink-free experience at the Plough down the road.
Well worth a visit.
