Dating from 1662, this commanding structure was rebuilt in 1899, the current interior dating from about 2013.
Externally the frontage is very grand, with cupola, multiple tiered riverside frontage and much relief work surrounding the windows. Internally, the current appearance is one of Young’s fairly trendy by the numbers joints, but quite restrained compared to some: a bare boarded floor, smoky grey or white colour scheme then wallpaper and light fittings – both trendy – and no surprises given the Thameside location, sculls and rowing paraphernalia bolted to walls. Furniture is conventional, though one element of note is the helical staircase leading to the khazis; customers at the time of my Thursday 9.40pm visit were typical of the breed.
Cask amounted to a whittled down Young’s range, so it was more Neck Oil, £3.80 the half.
This pub is ok though would obviously benefit from an improved cask lineup – Proper Job would have hit the spot – but the overly modernised interior is a bit of a shame for what was probably once an impressive edifice; a decent cask ale would have got the score up by 1.

Been many a year since I last had a beer here, so finding myself walking the Thames Path on a fine weather late afternoon popped in again for a pint.
The opened out interior is largely unchanged from what I remember, but the riverside garden area looked smarter, with the addition of a couple of covered seating booths, presumably recent as a result of the covid restrictions.
Two Young’s ales on in the shape of Ordinary and Special and they were both fine. If you are in the area on a fine weathers day, you can do a lot worse than have an alfresco beer by the Thames on the riverside patio

A very fine building ,this Youngs tied house overlooks the tidal Thames ,the ground floor interior gathers around a curved island bar.There is some wood panelling and original features ,while a side door leads to a charming outside terrace with wooden furniture and prime views of the river.Quite a few of the punters on my visit were dining,and serving staff loitered around,but it is fine to just pop in for a drink and sit anywhere free.That may well mean that your neighbours will be eating,but in the evening there were no signs of children thankfully.There is a first floor reception room for hire,while the gents are down in the cellar with a very musty smell,no doubt resulting from the proximity of the river.
There are three real ale available (doubled up) ,the options on my trip Youngs Ordinary ,Special and a seasonal Halloween brew but as I am not been a keen fan of their ales ,this detracted from the interesting location.

This is a smart looking pub that's just been refurbished. Large octagonal island bar with 24 keg pumps with 12 beers from Meantime and Camden etc.Six beers on 5 Youngs and Bombardier.My Winter warmer was okay.Very classy toilets down a circular stair with walking sticks attached to the walls.Best visited in the summer to appreciate the river setting.Dull range of real ale ruins it for me.

This is a large Victorian pub set in a spectacular riverside location, clearly once multi-roomed but now one space with the bar central in what I can only describe as a rhombus shaped space. Part bare boarded and part carpeted, large circular columns hold up the structure above where there is another bar accessed via the turret staircase.
Externally the raised terrace and balconies give superb river views and are clearly popular spots on what seemed like the first decent day in weeks, there was a BBQ on the go out here doing a roaring trade.
Back inside, the leaded windows have amber and green bands suggesting a previous Charrington's incarnation, a dartboard which would require some furniture rearrangement, a couple of fireplaces, decor with river scenes, prints and photos of the pub and a selection of books and games on a mantlepiece. Cricket on the TV while music played at a gentle volume, food menus on tables separate from the outdoor barbie. Quite pricey with burgers of various meats up to £11, steaks up to £19, rack of ribs £12.
Youngs beers, Ordinary Bitter, Special, London Gold, CW Bombardier plus guests from Sambrook's, Wandle and Pumphouse Pale Ale (£3.75). There was also a box of Weston's cider on the bar.
Not a bad pub at all, despite the inevitable opening out and probably very good throughout the seasons given the river views.

This is a Young’s house – they had on Bitter; Special; and Sambrook’s Wandle during my visit. A pint of the Wandle went down very nicely, and was just right for a warm summer’s day. The food consists of a barbeque, but was fairly reasonably priced, for this area anyway. The home made burgers were excellent, and my companions also enjoyed the grilled sardines and grilled vegetarian dish.
Clearly this is a pub of Victorian vintage, and although there is what appears to be some original etched and cut glasswork in the “public bar” doors, it has, like so many pubs, lost almost all of its original features. But there is evidence of its multi room past in the unused doors (the old “saloon/lounge” door seems not to be in use now) and tall cast iron pillars. But it’s still a decent enough pub – the ale was in good nick; the food was good; and the service friendly. The island bar is surrounded by comfortable furnishings and the walls are adorned with old photographs of the pub and its surroundings. By the door to the terrace overlooking the river there’s a sign inviting anyone who wants to sit outside when the weather is a little cool to help themselves to a blanket from the pile next to the sign (although there didn’t seem to be any available on a warm day in May). That’s a new one on me, and possibly one for the ladies! The pub’s right on the river, with lots of seating outside with excellent views of the river. For me it’s still retained some of its essential character, and is well worth a visit.

The third of Barnes three Youngs pubs, this is a largish late Victorian pub occupying a riverside position between Barnes railway bridge and the finishing line of the University Boat Race.
Previously a multi roomed pub, it’s now a large single room with a central oval shaped bar. Frosted leaded windows, some etched door glass on the street side of the pub and high ceilings and columns are reminders of a certain grandeur of an earlier age, but the interior has something of a stripped out feel with little of specific note.
The walls are decorated with old photos of the pub from which we see that the pub once had its own landing stage for river craft. The present building dates back to 1899. On the walls of the staircase downstairs, which is in a corner turret, is a large framed photo of John Young and the dray horses outside the pub. A covered balcony outside at the front with odd looking wicker seating enables you to watch the river traffic. Notably, blankets are provided for chilly evenings. At the side is a smallish patio which, on my recent visit, was about to host a BBQ. A blackboard tells us that “our new grassy patio is coming soon”, but, unfortunately, it’s within sight and sound of the road traffic. From this patio, steps lead down to the towpath and some additional seating by the water’s edge. There’s an upstairs room – The Coxswain Bar – which appears to be mainly used for televising sport, but is actually quite an attractive room in its own right. It contains a grand piano, together with most of the rowing memorabilia that was previously in the main bar downstairs.
In common with most Youngs pubs nowadays, there’s a much greater food emphasis and where the hot food counter originally was may be found a coffee machine, hissing noisily as they invariably do when being used. Aside from the summer BBQ’s, food is now cooked to order with a much wider food range than before, but of course it takes predictably much longer to arrive.
As well as the standard Youngs range, Sharps Cornish Coaster was on as a guest and, although it was in good form, it was rather expensive at £ 3.50p for an ABV of 3.6%. Bath Ales Gem was noted as “coming soon”.
This pub has a fine riverside location and gets of lot of custom from walkers and cyclists on the towpath. Worth calling in if passing through

First time to visit this large Victorian waterside drinking house for a while and it’s been done up again internally since my last visit and the tired interior spruced up a bit.
Some nice external glass etching on the external entrance doors, but internally it one big space, which can be a bit sole less when not very busy. As Rex mentions below, most of the period fittings have disappeared a long time ago, but was good to find that the traditional Victorian toilets upstairs for the function room are still intact.
Benefits from a very nice external riverside seating area on two sides of the building and there are additional bench tables on the green grass section by the river.
Not the most dynamic of staff even as it wasn’t that busy on this Sunday evening. Usual brewery offerings but the Youngs guest ale policy is maintained here and Bath Ales Gem was on as it was in the earlier Youngs house I had visited. So plumped for a pint of London Gold and it was perfectly fine and the outside seating was a great spot to take in the last of the Suns rays

Large Youngs pub, right by the river. Popular on boat race day. Usual ales for a Youngs pub, but did have St Austall's Tribute. Patio overlooks the Thames. Toilets are down, what reminds me of a castle turret, stairs.

This is a large pub with island bar and great views of the Thames from the terrace and seating area. It is open plan and very bright and airy and the barmaid was friendly enough, although I had to wait for her to finish her phone call before she would serve me – Her apology was accepted. I found the prices to be in line with most other pubs in the area and the premises to be clean and fairly well maintained.
Youngs Ordinary and Special were available alongside Bombardier, Tribute and various standard and premium lagers.
This is a nice place for a few afternoon jars in the sun.
