Self-described as a Georgian building and in existence since at least 1825 so possibly so, this is a gloomy looking slate grey building on Georgian Kennington Road.
All visible on their website with some merch marketed as ‘Cock Lovers’, the interior is utterly made over with modern boarding, dark, eclectic oil paintings to the ceiling, yellow match boarding to walls, rainbow balloons, a rainbow fan to a modern bar back and a cucumber mounted in a phallic position in the citrus fruit bowl. On high, there’s a spinning glitterball and loud music in the form of Madonna and Blondie. Customers were resolutely gay with some women, though probably so-called ‘fag hags’ rather than lesbians and all enjoying the atmosphere of a Thursday evening.
With a Landlord pump removed, my beverage of choice amounted to a half of Meantime IPA at a punishing £3.90, served by a friendly barman.
This place is clearly popular with its core demographic and it otherwise seemed pleasant enough for its purpose, though the lack of cask beer and outrageous prices are a stumbling block, but I wish it and its customers well.
