A charming multi-roomed pub just off the common in the centre of Penn & Tylers Green, this is owned by the same people in charge at the lauded Royal Standard in nearby Forty Green. An old pub sign affixed to the outer wall is a good start, and on entering the floor is a pleasing dark-wooded tongue and groove blocks with a large inglenook fireplace dominating the wall to the right and the seating is a mixture of nicely-worn sofas, standard tables and chairs and 'mini settles' with stained glass inserts. There's a square room to the right of the of the bar between it and the fireplace housing further seating and a dartboard along with what appears to be an intimate function through a doorway to the left of the bar which houses a large dining table. Two locAles in the form of Chiltern Beechwood Bitter and Windsor & Eton Knight of the Garter were a good sign, accompanied by Black Sheep Bitter. The former came in at £3.80 for a pint and was offered in either a straight or handled receptacle. No piped muzak gave for a nice Olde Worlde pub ambiance and only the Specials Board (Pigeon Breast with a Creamy Chestnut Mushroom Sauce anyone?) gave any indication to any underlying pretension.
