An attractive pub situated in a row of terraced houses in a side street, this is a proper locals pub for the area. The wood panelled and carpeted interior are charmingly dated and the place has the faded glamour of an early 1970’s gentleman’s club with a homely feel – no music and no TV on my visits, just conversation which can often stray from polite blandness. There’s usually three ales on (and they are usually Harveys, Pride and St Austell Tribute) in good nick. No food is offered – beer only. The locals are an eccentric bunch and a fair number seem to have an ex-military slant (the framed soldiers tunic in the pub presumably signifies some deeper military connection?). There are posters of former breweries annexed by Whitbread which is a point of interest for beer buffs. I do like this one and it’s worth seeking out for something a bit esoteric.

The bar is opposite on entering this warm comfortable and welcoming pub. Two carpeted rooms with bench seating and low stools at small round tables with a cast iron centre post. Both rooms have fireplaces with coal effect fires, curtains at the windows, some wood panelling, a few artifacts on a high shelf. There are a number of framed pictures and old advertisments, the framed posters of the various former breweries swallowed up by Whitbread over the years were especially interesting. This is a former Whitbread house, and this can be clearly seen in the old photo in the side room. There is a TV, high up in the back corner of the side room, but this was off. The main focus of the bar is in the L shaped main room, but the side area has a service hatch. A sign states that the side room is available for private hire, free of charge. This can work as there is a rear link passage to get to the toilets from the main room. Dimpled jugs hang from hooks over the bar. The barmaid (landlady?) serving was friendly and efficient. Beers were St Austell Tribute..in tip top form..Taylors Landlord and Pride.
This is a very good pub with a calm relaxed atmosphere, no machines or music, just the hum of conversation. My vote for the best pub visited in the area on the day.

This homely pub is small yet perfectly formed. The landlady is extremely friendly and the ale is top notch. Bombardier, Pride and Tribute were available along with some standard draught.
If I'd known some of the dross establishments that I ended up going into after this pub I would have knocked the crawl on the head and stayed here all day.

They had Bombardier, Pride and Tribute on – the Tribute was superb, but at £3.15 a pint it is not cheap although I would prefer to pay that than have an ordinary pint for £2.80 or so. The pub is carpeted throughout; there was a coal-effect gas fire on the go; comfortably furnished; no TVs on, and I didn't see any one-armed bandits or juke boxes either. It is set in a terraced street, with an attractive frontage and comprises two bars joined by an archway with a few (false?) beams.
This is a warm and welcoming pub that was fairly busy on an early Thursday evening. I can't see any reason to come here other than for the decent ale and good conversation. I'll be back!
