Formerly a pub-cum-Chinese, this has now had the word 'Tree' appended to its name and has had a stack of cash thrown at it by Greene King with quite a spruce-up and isn't the dive it once was. Spruce, however, means a hodgepodge of distressed wood, wacky wallpaper (dogs as historical figures anyone?), tables and chairs of varying heights, flooring which veers from bare-boarded to large mosaic-type tiles and Roald Dahl quotes on the walls. An extended dining area out back to the left is vaulted, with two-thirds height wood panelling, and wouldn't be out of place in an Oxford college. Two ales out of four available were from the Bury St Edmunds stable in Abbot Ale and a pretty decent Ale Fresco, which was a reasonable £3.50 a pint. Modern indie-rock soundtrack (Maccabees, Vaccines) interspersed with Spandau Ballet (Tony Hadley is a Bucks boy these days), albeit probably a little on the too-loud side, yet all-in-all it's an impressive reversal of fortune.
