Old Boots left this review about Angel & Royal Hotel
A venerable and famous old inn on the Great North Road, once just called the Angel its carved stone front can be found illustrated in numerous old books about the English Inn. Entering through the arch where stage coaches used to there is a currently unused cocktail bar to the right and to the left the hotel reception and left again the bar. A small room contains the counter and there’s a larger dining room beyond. The bar is a splendid room with a stone fireplace, old probably original ceiling beams and carved stonework in the window reveal and in corbels above the fireplace. The counter is along most of one side, the rest of the room having banquette seating at small tables along with empire style chairs. I suppose a £100+ a night hotel isn’t a place to expect decent cask beers but there are two handpumps between the T-Bars of higher end national kegs, there was one well kept beer from local brewery Zest with a reversed clip from the same people. Service and pricing much as you would expect from a posh hotel, obsequious and a half was £2.60 for a 4.2% beer. Posh it maybe but it still insists on constantly playing music.

Typical hotel bar with little in the way of ale to enjoy.

The building circa 1203, you enter into a narrow courtyard with a small bar on the right and the main bar on the left. Large oak beams and traditional deco with a small oak bar serving Oldershaw Alchemy. Well worth a look in and beer was well kept.
