With time to kill after a quick drain of my beer at the Waggon, I decided to try this one on the way back to the tram. Seemingly refurbed in a perfunctory manner about 1990; embossed wallpaper, deep red fabric banquettes and Victorian-era prints over two rooms in a somewhat down-at-the-mouth atmosphere. It even smelt a bit 90s, with a faint lingering of old fags in the air. “Feels like a pub that was a drink & drive venue 40 years ago but has lost its point” I scribed. Two cask, Doom Bar and Robbie's Dizzy Blonde (NBSS 2.5 - fag end). Comedy at the servery as the barmaid poured a pint rather than a half and then couldn't work the till to correct it. The piped 80s music was at least good. Feels like it won't last – on a Friday night there were only about a dozen other punters, if that.

Called in again, there are still 2 handpumps contrary to the previous review. Sadly, they were serving the rather mundane Youngs Ordinary and the rather more unusual Highgate Mild. My pint was in good nick though. A pleasant buzz around the pub as the mainly middle aged clientele had a post work drink. I went to play on the quiz machine and had just won a couple of quid, when a group of loud mouthed idiots arrived and promptly changed the whole character of the pub. Nothing was said to them by the staff, so I assume they're known to them. I left. Down a point for allowing numpties to ruin the pubs atmosphere.

When I worked in Milnrow quite a few years ago this pub was The Commercial, I think. I assume it's now named after the Hayley Mills film although there's a hell of a lot of difference between Milnrow and Crete. It's now a nicely decorated one roomed lounge bar with a small pool room at the rear. I visited at about 9 on a Friday evening and most of the clientele were older couples. There were 2 handpumps on the bar and my pint of Marston's Galaxy was in good nick. There was music from the 80's playing at a sensible volume, the bar staff were friendly as were the clientele. I enjoyed my visit to this pub and will certainly call in next time I'm in Milnrow.
