Situated off to the east of Ormskirk, close to the real ale desert of Skelmersdale, the Prince Albert was due to be my final pub of the day in the Ormskirk area.

However, I'd arrived at 9:15pm and the pub now closes at 9pm on a Sunday. 3 cask ales were on - a beer called Holborns Tower & Steeple which apparently comes from a brewery called Malthouse, along with Reedley Hallows Nook of Pendle & Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold.

To my surprise, when I revealed that I'd come from London to visit the pub (along with a few others), the landlady offered me a beer on the house. I thought this was a really friendly gesture and whilst I offered to pay, she had already cashed up. We had a lovely chat about the local pubs and my hobby of visiting pubs, which eventually involved a few of the locals too.

The pub has a couple of rooms. The main bar has a raised area to the sides. The side room only had one customer that I could see and he appeared to be asleep!

As a pub, it's slightly above average for the Ormskirk area, but for the excellent hospitality, it's easily the best. A friendly place whose position in the Good Beer Guide is easily justified.

Lovely cosy village pub just outside Ormskirk. though unsurprisingly majoring on food it’s still very much a traditional locals pub at the bar with three decent ales on today. Old style decor and friendly regulars make this a very worthwhile place to visit if you’re in the area. The food is probably also good judging by the reserved tables on a Tuesday evening.

THE PRINCE ALBERT IS A TRADITIONAL PUB SITUATED IN THE VILLAGE OF WESTHEAD. THE BEERS ARE ALWAYS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION (INCLUDING A MINIMUM OF TWO GUEST ALES) AND THE SERVICE IS SECOND TO NONE. A SELECTION OF FINEST QUALITY HOME COOKED MEALS ARE AVAILABLE DURING THE AFTERNOON AT PRICES THAT CERTAINLY WON'T BREAK THE BANK, AND THE SUNDAY ROAST IS ALWAYS A BIG SELLER (ADVISABLE TO BOOK IN ADVANCE). THE PRINCE ALSO HAS ROOMS AVAILABLE ON A BED AND BREAKFAST BASIS AT VERY REASONABLE RATES. MANDY AND SIMON ARE THE PERFECT HOSTS AND MAKE THEIR CUSTOMERS FEEL AT HOME.

The is the sort of roadside pub that you would always notice but generally pass by but if you are looking for a lucky dip stop off, this is a pretty decent place to check out. The interior is plain, simple and unfussy with 4 distinct areas divided by various wooden railings. The bar area is largely standing with a tiled floor whilst to the left is a games section containing a TV and dart board. Down one side of the pub is raised lounge area with built in seating and a large brick fireplace. Opposite the bar is a cosy snug.

The 4 ales available on my visit were Tetleys, Tetleys Mild, Southport Carousel and Blach Sheep Best with very keen prices. The food was also good value with some tempting Sunday specials (shame it wasn’t a Sunday when we called though).

Overall quite a decent unpretentious place worthy of a quick stop at least.
