A community local, a stone’s throw from the boarded-up Queen. Low-ceilinged interior is carpeted and has a few faintly dated features like dodgy artex-style walls but it’s all kept to a high standard so feels more like a charming quirk than decorating nightmare. A TV in the corner seating area was showing horse racing to a gaggle of old boys. Some interesting ephemera, including a musket mounted above the bar and an original Whitbread 'ale & stout' mirror. The road-facing section caught lots of light, best seats in house, though a couple of interesting inlaid brick archway seating areas also caught the eye. Unmarked drop-steps on the way in and to the gents to catch out the non-locals (a man-trap I fell right into). To the rear is a decent sized patio area, crazily paved back in 1982 by the looks of it though the potted flora and fauna does enough to detract. Very busy on a Saturday afternoon with good mix of punters in situ. Two ales, Pride and Doom Bar, which I guess are exactly the kind of safe sellers this sort of pub can shift in volume. My Pride was in decent shape, no complaints, served up a friendly mature bar lady. Being a good community local marks this one out as being worth a visit if you’re nearby. Long may it continue. If more suburban locals were like this, there’d be less of them closing.
