Quite a large pub this one, nice garden area to the side. However that's where the praise stops. Feels very pretentious. 2 drinks cost £24.30. They do food also but didn't sample. Not for me this one.

Re-opened 25/06 after a long period of closure and a big refurb. The main part of the interior remains similar, layout-wise, although they have whacked through into the old toilets. It's now painted muted red and green. The old stable unit has been brought back into use as an upmarket restaurant area. They've flattened the old car park and raised garden and turned it - very nicely - into a huge patio with some beach hut style structures off to the right. RG1 has very few beer garden options so this is guaranteed to draw the crowds. Four cask ales; St Austell Tribute, Doom Bar, TT Landlord and a local one in Loddon Ferryman's Gold. Quality was fair though I suspect that the range will likely be reduced before long; with our group out of the equation they weren't really shifting enough in my opinion. Inevitably, it's card-only at the till. All-in-all a very pleasant surprise and certainly a huge improvement. The garden means it's likely to see more of my business over the coming months.

What can I say? The place smells and ale quality is frequently awful. There's a classic pub waiting to get out.

New licensees a while back. Inside has had a much-needed spruce-up. Now up to half a dozen ales available though choice is rarely awe-inspiring, usually major national brands. Slow turnover means they can be out-of-condition a little too often. Bar billiards available, which makes it worth a look.

Old coaching inn that claims to date from the 17th century. Interior is, as well-described below, 'rambling' and 'disjointed'. This should be one of Reading's best pubs but the beer is usually pretty awful and as a consequence, most of its custom has disappeared. Shame.

A nice looking pub inside and out, all in keeping with its claims to be one of the oldest pubs in Reading,I found it to be a very friendly and comfortable place all in all and if it wasn't for the lack of beer choice would have happily stayed for a second pint, of the three pumps on the bar only one was operating and this was serving up Adnams Southwold Bitter,an ordinary pint at the best of times but it was well kept all the same. I did very much like the pub though and will have another look in the future.

The ale here as mentioned by Quinno is a pretty decent range. The pub itself is spacious, but despite the space very quiet on a weekend afternoon. There is a Pool Table and plenty of TV screens showing the football.

Old rambling place with an interesting disjointed interior, the bar counter is hidden away in a back corner. There are low ceilings, plastered walls and half timbering dividing the place into a jumble of odd shaped areas on different floor levels. The front room has screens and machines, beyond which is the bar through to the left and what appears to have been a corridor to the right. This has now been opened out to form a comfortable drinking and seating area with a big modern juke box. Further back is a space on a much lower floor level, probably for dining, but deserted when I was there. A door at the back leads to a patio. Two handpumps with Courage Best and Deuchars IPA, I plumped for the Deuchars but soon regretted this rash decision, mediocre would be a polite description. Nothing unusual or of note in the keg line up.

Nice old building and looked like a good ‘all things to all men' pub. Different seating and drinking areas, quiz, fruit and games machines and Sky Sports throughout. Had a decent pint of Deuchars.
