Re-opens 23/11

Sept 2014
More new licensees and another refit. Now two guest ales alongside the GK staples but the quality of the Slaters the other night was awful. Has BrewDog on keg but comes out murky. Hmmm.

Nov 2012
New licensees and a refurb. Beer quality higher than previous, usually fairly decent now. Not a fan of GK beer myself but I'm more inclined to pay the odd visit now and again. Now beginning to get a proper seasonal or non-GK guest in, a Porter the other week. Not a pub to set the pulse racing but tidy enough.

July 2010
A tidy, if perhaps uninspiring, backstreet GK outlet. A couple of GK beers on in middling condition. Food is available and it's a good place to catch the football. Back garden is pretty tidy. I wouldn't say it was worth a specific journey if you're enjoying the beer in the Nags but it's a good pub to have in an area that's got a bit of a bad reputation.

Largeish pub in the sidestreets, with several areas arranged round the bar, including sports TVs and darts and pool area (but probably not at same time), Forecourt tables and garden at rear. Beers from GK range with a guest from Loddon which was off (literally); the GK replacement was ok but not in the best form. Might have just ben unlucky but raises a question over ale quality. There are better pubs not far away.

What was once obviously (given its location) a back street boozer, is now a family ,foody type place, all very Greene King Corporate, and not really my kind of place. Six pumps all working, three Greene King beers and three guests although on the ordinary side the pick being Wadsworths 6x.Good to bring the family out for a meal and not bad to watch a football match, but no longer an honest boozer, sadly I suspect it would not be as well populated as it was on my Sunday afternoon visit if it were.I wont be hurrying back myself though.

Old Boots left this review about Rose & Thistle

Back street local near Reading West station, a Greene King pub, it has a dominating position at the top of a hill at the end of a street visible to passers by on the Oxford Road. It looks like a series of makeovers have left it with one of those strange interior layouts, open plan but an awkward shape. A long room across the front which extends on one side to the back broadening out past the bar counter into an area with pool table, a raised area for eating and a patio, there is also a patio at the front. Decorated in the traditional pub colours of cream walls, brown wood and red floral carpets it has the usual big screens, machines and retains a dart board. A sea of T Bars lines the counter with two handpumps serving GK's beers of middling quality. Customers were mainly men between 20 and 50 when I called in, with a few couples eating. It was apparently voted the “Pride of Reading” pub of the year in 2006.
