Real old fashioned homely pub over a couple of rooms exuding a 1940s feel with various prints, maps and mirrors – though apparently it only opened in this guise in 1984. To the rear is a supercharged flora and fauna garden, one of the finest in the region I’d wager. Friendly old landlady informed me that there used to be much more ephemera but it was sold-off after husband died as she couldn’t face cleaning it all. One cask ale, Adnams Lighthouse, sadly a bit long in the tooth (NBSS 2). There was a surprising lack of customers given the sunny weather and fantastic garden. Worth dropping in whilst the current lady is in situ as these kind of old fashioned places tend to only last as long as the licensee who made and maintained them is there.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Rose of England

Towards the top end of the High Street (although almost a side street by this point), this is a rather fine traditional pub which certainly exceeded my expectations. In some ways unremarkable, but you get a friendly welcome whether a local or a random passing stranger. On a grey, wet Monday between Christmas and the New Year, this was one of the few open establishments (and well placed for me, being on the walk back to the station). The two-part bar area has half-height wood panelling with various prints, maps and mirrors, as does the side lounge. Furthermore, after several stops with keg or bottled beers as the best option, this one has a couple of Gadds real ales on handpump: HPA (£3.20, in fine form and good value) and She Sells Sea Shells.

Just off the High Street, with plenty of room outside for smokers; inside there's a large room with bar, as well as a few smaller rooms to the sides. These weren't occupied on my visit, as the custom didn't warrant it - just a handful of us in for the early evening session. A friendly bunch, though and with prices rather lower than I'm used to, they've every reason to be in good humour.

Ales comprised 2 from Gadds and 2 of the usual suspects (the identities of which I failed to note). My Seasider was reasonable enough.

I'd recommend a stop if you're making the long trek from the station to the harbour (or back again); on the evidence of my visit, the pub does need a bit more support.
