Backstreet CAMRA heritage pub presumably due to the attractive bar and back - wood with reliefs, etched mirror glass backing and gilt leather frieze. Otherwise it's a fairly modern place over two rooms, done-out in a fairly oppressive dark green which has extended to glooping the whole fireplace and ceiling. Three pumps with one cask on the go, an aged (via aspirator?) Sheps Masterbrew (NBSS 2). A Hen-do was in attendance which added an oddly semi-raucous atmosphere at 12.45 on a Saturday afternoon. Worth a nose for the heritage bar but having seen it once I can’t imagine I’d be inclined to re-do it unless there’s a significant upswing on the beer quality front or they re-do the inside to make it less glum. 5.5

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Rose in June
Quite an interesting old pub in the higher part of the town, although being set one road back from the clifftop it doesn't really have a direct view of the sea. Both parts of the interior have been substantially refurbished in a semi-traditional style, but some heritage aspects remain (especially the splendid bar-back in the saloon bar). As a Shepherd Neame house, I found Whitstable Bay Pale (£4.20) available on the three handpumps, with a reversed Bishops Finger clip also noted on another.
