This pub looks magnificent from the outside with what must be its original green brewery tiling still in place. But I didn't see anything of heritage interest inside, which in fact is a classic example of a brewer's rustic interior. There are black painted beams on the ceiling, bar counter front and gantry, with the walls and bar counter front having over exaggerated rough plasterwork. Actually it's all a bit overdone to be convincing, but that's the 70s for you. Furnishings are grubby upholstered banquettes round the edges of the room, accompanied by normal tables and chairs, and it's carpeted throughout. The drinking area wraps itself around the central horseshoe bar and stretches back to the right where there's a pool table and a door leading out to a garden.
There was only one handpump here, drawing Courage Best. I'm not sure of the price, but a half and a bag of crisps was £2.05 so it can't have been too expensive. I probably paid what it was worth. I saw no sign of food on Monday lunchtime.
I was the only customer in but it looks like a locals' pub to me. It's certainly not an upmarket place! There are several pubs within a short walk of this one, so I would guess that competition is fairly fierce. But I hope that this one survives, not least because of its exceptional exterior.
