Built in 1702 as a farmhouse, The Hen and Chickens became an ale house in around 1746. It was the focal point for the agricultural workers and brickmakers in the area, then as Chatham expanded it was a terminus for the horse bus then the tram. There was a forge on the side, but that burnt down some decades ago. Nowadays it's the centre of Luton community activities, used almost exclusively by locals. It has been knocked through to form a single large bar although it has retained some of its character. There are battered chairs and tables, a faded carpet, two pool tables, gaming machines and a surplus of hoodies making it look a bit like a youth club. There is no real ale, and the megakeg beers were very overpriced. Of historical interest, but I see no reason to rush back here for a drink at the moment.
