A bizarrely low-grade local in quite a nice area. Lots of effing and blinding but seemingly amiable patrons with the Newbury jukebox (inappropriately over-loud chart music – Lady Ga Ga this time) going full-pelt on Saturday afternoon. Clientèle were all male bar the large and friendly goth barmaid. Everyone was congregated in the right hand side with the pool and darts area deserted bar someone gently snoozing. Whitewashed wood panelling on a low ceiling with aged carpet on the floor. An ancient-looking arcade machine was switched off. Perhaps surprisingly there were two ale pumps with one on, West Berks Mr Chubbs Lunchtime at 3 quid a go and in very good nick. McEwans lager on keg which I haven't seen for years. Blackboard advertising deals, all spirit-based. It seemed rather incongruous all round in here. I suspect there’s a good pub trying to get out. It does say ‘free house’ on the pub sign…?
