Opened in 1835 as the Kent Hotel, the name was changed to the Royal Squadron Hotel in 1919. Around 1980 the rooms were converted to flats and the hotel became a pub. It was still known as the Royal Squadron but the bar was named the Mary Rose Bar. Back then it became one of the places for my peer group to go. The pub has gone through long periods of closure this century and in 2013 was reopened under the new name of Coburgs. It is a pub/nightclub hybrid and the low lighting, wood floor and very sparsely furnished long narrow bar is in keeping with this. When I visited, at 19:30 on a Thursday there was only one customer and a chatty barmaid present. I was assured that it would get busy later. At the end of the bar area doors open to a dance area with a place at the back for a band. All very clubby. No real ale. Probably a great place for youngsters but not really for me any more.

Now a live music venue that is only open Thursday, Friday & Saturday. There is a cover charge for some bands.
