Almost ten years on from BF’s inaugural review this McMullens pub is still identical to his description. Still very much an estate pub as described below with an extremely large internal space arranged around the central serving bar, especially the large area at the back housing double large screens, double dart boards and a pool table. And as my visit was during the current European Football Championships, the whole pub is decked with St George flags. Definitely one for watching sport as I lost count how many flat screens ( large and small) are dotted around the pub, suffice to say that there isn’t a single area where you can sit where you do not have a direct view of one.
A lot of keg taps on the two main sections of the bar including a couple of beers from the breweries Rivertown arm. Also three hand pumps on each section of the bar but only one in operation on each with McMullens AK which, considering everyone else seemed to be on the Lagers, was surprisingly good.
I did have a chat with the long standing landlady who explained that the pub is to shut for three weeks for a makeover, but this sounded more cosmetic, like replacing the well worn wooden floor and a lot of the well worn furnishings rather than a full Mac makeover changing its character away from a sports focussed estate pub.
It performs a purpose for the local community and, due to other local closures over the years, is now one of the nearest pub to Hertford North train station, being a ten minute walk away, with only the Millstream slightly closer.

A classic estate pub owned by McMullens and serving the once notorious Sele Farm. The dark brown slatted window blinds caused a moments hesitation, but I pressed on inside and was pleasantly surprised at the tidy interior surrounding an L shaped bar.Karndean flooring and upholstered bench seating with a few Chesterfield chairs around the bar, with a seperate carpeted pool room with darts to the rear with a mix of sofas, high chairs and tables. There are a lot of flatscreens with Sky and BT Sports coverage, which will include a 3pm Saturday ko match from an overseas Sky feed. One niggle was the overloud local commercial radio station playing current pop music, not needed as the pub was reasonably busy.It looks like a wet led pub,I could see no sign of food and at the bar the three handpumps were dispensing AK,Cask (£3.10 and well kept) and a seasonal Mc Mullens brew of Tommy's Tipple. The barman was friendly and asked if I wanted my pint in a jug or glass, nice touch.
There are a few benches outside for external drinking and a decent sized car park.
The punters were all well behaved on my Friday lunchtime visit, and the atmosphere was pleasantly relaxed so despite the location, this may not be a bad option to watch televised sport and sink some pints.
