Reopened after refurbishment a few months after my inaugural visit and this is the first time I’ve been back in. It is a bit more characterful, though the very quiet 70s soundtrack and muted World Cup on the telly meant the atmosphere was somewhat lacking. Three Greene King ales, my Abbot was actually fairly decent which was a pleasant surprise. It’s an improvement.

This is a hotel with a bar, food and courtyard. Somewhat surprisingly there were two Greene King ales - OSH (in very good shape) at a whopping £1.95 for a half and IPA - served by a courteous if ruthlessly efficient barmaid-cum-waitress. Whilst the interior was a pretty bland affair (comfy seating is through an archway to the left away from the IKEA-lite main bar) there’s a rear courtyard that was quite tidy. Clientèle very upmarket, a lot of wine being drunk though the pair of leather-clad bikers who turned up were treated with the same professional courtesy by the staff. There’s a historic connection to William of Orange (he stayed here) detailed on external plaque. Only one to do if you’re a completest, really. Rated 5
