Real ale drinkers should not worry about the prominent word "Carling" on the inn sign: there are a couple of hand pumps on the bar here. Though to be strictly accurate, at the time of my visit there was only Grays Best available, the beer for which the term was invented (not), so I opted instead for the Westons cider that was on the other hand pump. The pump clip said scrumpy but the cider I got was not cloudy, so I'm not sure what its provenance was, but at £1.20 a half I wasn't complaining. There was football on the TV and the landlord was mingling in a friendly way with his regulars. There's another bar to the side and rear, and this has an unusual collection of old typewriters and sewing machines in the windows, with the name Cygnets Lounge on the door. A footpath leads from the street to the nearby Co-op supermarket, and there's a small patio belonging to the pub to the side of this passage. In sum, quite a decent pub that would be improved with the addition of a couple of decent real ales.
