A large early Victorian pub which looks rather grand and feels like a proper pub in many respects. There is a large car park at the side, and there are some holiday chalets at the bottom of the enclosed garden. The garden itself is unimpressive, mainly paved, but it’s a useful outside drinking area. Inside there are two main bar areas. There is a comfortable dining and saloon area, and an equally large public bar formed from knocking-through, with gaming machines and TV screens. There is a collection of books for loan on a long bookshelf above the bar. There are bar stools at the bar now, which promote a local feel and makes people feel welcome. Ales on were Hobgoblin Gold and Doombar, both in reasonable condition. I liked it here – it has a good local feel to it, and we were made to feel welcome. Worth dropping in if you’re out this way, though there aren’t many other pubs around here that would form a decent crawl.
