As described, this traditional Georgian town pub feels a bit wasted in its current form. The bars seem uncared for, the décor is shabby, and the overall air is depressing. They offer B and B, but it doesn’t feel that appealing. The bars have been made open plan, though distinct areas are still demarcated. There are wooden floors, a large inglenook and another large brick fireplace. There was a mute TV screen, a dartboard and a gaming machine in the main bar. They offer breakfast but we weren’t inclined to eat here. The staff were pleasant, but the pub felt chaotic and there was a strong smell of smoke drifting in from somewhere. Ales on draught were Forty-Niner and Razorback, plus there was a range of megas including Guinness. Two dry handpumps also adorned the bar. There are much better pubs nearby.

This should be the best in town but falls far short. An old coaching inn, it would have been the top spot in town once, the place where the local worthies wined and dined, had their weddings and wakes and Rotary dinners.
Alas no more, very much a mediocre chain pub complete with the usual microwave menu and poor beer quality, run for the benefit of the accountants. No need to linger.
