Large restaurant like pub on a corner location, the smokers are much reduced and access is easier. The front is a biggish down to earth bar with a pool table and 4 pulls of fairly mundane beers, behind is a very long dining area. Less of the usual nautical decor but includes some model boats. A Geo Gale & Co sign on one outside wall is hidden by a tacky banner. On a positive note it's opposite the Mary Rose and HMS Victory in HM Dockyard.

Taking up the entire ground floor of a long Georgian terrace, the single rambling bar/restaurant still manges to feel cosy and pleasant for the most part. Entry was made difficult by a gang of smokers who were blocking the door and got shirty when asked to let us in. There is a small lino-floored drinking area, a children's play area, a raised floor with a pool table near the disproportionately small bar, but the rest is dedicated to tables for diners. The walls are cluttered with bric-a-brac. The food is nothing special, however, just the usual cheap bar snacks of the Brake Brothers variety. The clientele were mostly tourists plus a few locals, some of whom hadn't quite got the idea of cutlery. Three ales were available – I tried the house bitter, Ship's Own' which was probably GK IPA. It was reasonably well kept, but not exciting. I would like to like this pub more, given its impressive architecture and reasonable beer, but sadly I don't and I don't envisage making it a regular haunt when there is so much better ale to be had nearby.

When we visited the Ship and Castle it had a bit of a dilapidated look to it from the ouside.
This pub has got a very long frontage and once inside there was a largish room that looked in need of some attention, this room was almost empty when we went in here but it looked like it was more of a dining pub and not a proper drinkers pub.
When we went in this pub it was a Whitbread tied house and there were two real ales on the bar i had a drink of Wadworths 6X and this was a very nice drink the other beer was Boddingtons bitter.
Not one of out favourite Portsmouth pubs.
