The lovely looking exterior with the preserved Brickwoods signage, maintained obscure glazed windows and old signage suggest this may be a hidden backstreet gem. It isn't. Down at heel inside, the exposed brick fireplace hints at a more locally valued history with two photographs of individuals, male and female probably from the 60s.
There is a dark stained boarded floor, a traditional layout with banquettes and small tables, no real ale currently, there was a TV on blaring out a game show, the area to the rear has a pool table.
This has all the potential to be a great pub, and it could be with some effort and investment, maybe this isn't the right part of town. No real ale currently, I made do with a half of some fizzy rubbish. The service was fine and friendly however, can't see me coming back without some changes. I'm sure it suits the locals though.

A glass tile fronted Victorian back street boozer, very much a traditional local, just off the Commercial Road shopping area. It’s named after one of the ships in Nelson’s fleet, rather than the planet, although the atmosphere is more reminiscent of the latter. There is a large main bar and a smaller snug, both wooden floored.. There is a pool table, gaming machines and an over-loud jukebox. The furniture looks a bit battered, but the décor is in reasonable order. Staff were a bit vague about what they were doing, while the regulars weren’t the friendliest. There is no real ale on, so I made do with a bottle of Newcastle brown. Fine if you’re a local, but I won’t be orbiting around here too often.

This is a real back street boozer, dates from the Brickwoods Brewery days, the Portsmouth Blitz somehow missed this pub, and when Brickwoods shut the pub seems to have continued in it's time warp to this very day

If you like back street boozers this is the pub for you
