I’ve tried several times to visit this pub before, but opening hours are fluid. This time, however, I was successful and I was pleasantly surprised. Clearly things have improved since Kate’s comment, below. This traditional Victorian corner pub has been partly opened out inside to form a large L-shaped public bar and a smaller square games room. Darts and pool are played here, and there is a jukebox. One end of the main bar is carpeted and set with tables for diners, while the other is more for vertical drinking. There is also a small brick fireplace with an open fire. There is only one ale on, Pride, which was in very good condition, well kept. A large TV screen was showing football, and there were various football memorabilia, all associated with Pompey, fixed to the walls. There was even a Pompey device carved into the wooden doorstep. Food is mainly pies – not home made – and curries for social events. It’s a decent local, especially if you like football, and I’d be happy to drop back in when passing.

Step back in time, or better still, just step back.
