A revisit at the start of a pub crawl and not the end! Beautifully located pub with its beer garden over the road on the grass overlooking the valley, replete with mature tree, pre-war black and white placemarker and gold Olympic winner’s phone box (dressage!). Internally, it's an elongated knocked through room with a separate dining area through a door off to the right (currently not open as they are ‘between chefs’). The main bar area has quarry tile flooring, basic wood seating and a dart board – nothing fancy. Some board games spotted including a roulette wheel. Also equipment for live music was set up. Four ales; two Fullers (Pride, Front Row) Triple FFF Altons Pride (in very good nick) and Upham Punter. Not a selection to get overly excited about but decent enough. Impressive range of pub snacks - nuts in jars behind the bar as well as pickled eggs, cockles and biltong. Nice little place for a sunny afternoon stop-off.

A friendly freehouse dating back to 1841, heated by open fires. Live blues music is featured and there is a large annual blues festival held every August. Four ales on during my visit (Triple FFF Scissor Sisters, Palmers Copper, London Pride and Bowmans Swift One) plus some local bottled ciders. My notes are very sketchy (I had overdone it at the Hole in the Wall earlier) and all I wrote beyond the beer list was “7 – pleasant”; so I’ll go with that then. Rated 7
