Large branch of Wetherspoon's on the main road through Leigh-on-Sea. This one used to be an old pub and still has its own car park, one of those where you have to enter your registration on a machine inside.
The seating area wraps almost all the way around the central bar. There are the usual cheap meals and drinks. Whilst there were lots of staff, there was the usual wait to be served. There were also loads of kids. But plus points wer a reasonable size outdoor drinking area to the front with a handily placed bus stop outside too.
The trio of doom (Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar) were all present. Guest beers were Nethergate Masterpiece, Woodforde's Nog, Rooster's Yankee & Coach House Post Horn. My Masterpiece was distinctly ordinary. On the cider front, there was Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon & Weston's Old Rosie & Rosie's Pig.

Unapologetic old skool Timbo Tavern which is a conversion from a previous pub in the mid 90s, hence the non-personalised name. U shaped interior with plenty of booths, dark wood, glass, quality carpet - you know the score - all kept well. Decent outside seating area as well. Four guest cask though the app didn't match up with reality, seems to be a bit of a Essex curse. My Brentwood SPA started in decent nick but died fairly rapidly in the glass (NBSS 2.5). Good atmosphere. 6.5

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Elms (JD Wetherspoon)
Very large suburban roadhouse with a hint of brewer's Tudor; little changed externally, but given the typical 'spoons treatment inside. Features an overall 'L'-shaped bar with the usual selection of booths and larger seating areas. Also has some patio tables out front. Three banks of six handpumps, but quite a few duplicates and 'available son's; and, even more annoyingly, at least two interesting beers that appeared to be on but were not... In the end, opted for the local St George's Brickfields IPA (£2.30) which was decent enough, but I was left with the strong impression that the management could do a lot better here.

This is a conversion of an original old pub and is named after a tree.
It is GBG 2014 listed. This is a huge pub even by Spoons standards so it's hardly surprising it ended up in their hands. Inside it is the usual Spoons fixtures and fittings.
There were 18 handpumps which should be great news but sadly I only counted two beers from the current guest list, Coach House Gunpowder Mild and Wood's Shropshire Lad. The rest (around 4 were available soon and some doubled up) consisted of five Adnam's, three Greene King, Doom Bore and London Pride. To me this is a poor selection for any Spoons let alone one that is GBG listed. What's the point of having eighteen handpumps if they are just going to fill them with national brands?
I went for the Gunpowder Mild (£2.20) which was in good nick.
Overall I found this place disappointing especially as it is GBG listed. There are two other GBG pubs in Leigh so why bother including a Spoons with a poor selection of ales?

By the sounds of it, the Elms was quite an unsavooury pub before being closed down and eventually falling into the hands of Wetherspoons in the mid 90’s. The first thing you notice is the sheer size of the place. I don’t know Leigh-On-Sea too well but I would imagine that you could probably fit most of the town inside with room to spare for donkey rides. That said, the place is a stereotypical Wetherspoon outlet, just doubled up in every department. The Ale choice (which usually settles my good ‘Spoons / bad ‘Spoons dilemma) was very good with 7 Festival beers alongside the regulars and with 18 hand pumps, the sky is the limit if they can find an audience for more. There are several screened off snugs throughout the interior and its L-shape breaks up the vastness. Two flatscreen TV’s (surprisingly few given the pub’s size) are situated over fireplaces at each end of the pub and there is also a tabletop poker game. At the front of the pub is a patio with several benches and a reasonable sized car park to catch the traffic going into and out of nearby Southend. I didn’t really get to experience the place in its full glory during my fleeting early evening visit but didn’t catch anything here that would put me off and the place is actually a quite handy stop off before or after a trip to Southend although I suspect that it does have its “moments”.

08/03/09: Visited here a few times since my initial visit and we find that the quality of the beers is very variable and often you can't get a really nice pint, so it is a bit hit and miss..you'll have to take the gamble if you try it.
Lately this pub must have got it's act together. There are usually 5 or 6 real ales all in reasonable condition. As far as this type of pub goes it is one of the better ones and probably the best for Ale in Leigh...that's if you don.t mind people eating around you whilst you're drinking!.

This pub is hit and miss.Yesterday was a miss.Only Greene King Old Bob on as a guest. The only thing that saved it from no stars was that it had Old Rosie cider on.
