ORIGINAL REVIEW October 2016
A pleasing old building which has now been surrounded by Harlow New Town, this McMullens tied house is well used by the local community. There is a pleasant tree lined exterior patio with three distinct interal rooms,a public bar with pool , darts and Sky Sports to the far left,a quiet square snug room with wooden furniture and a lounge to the right ,with a large barn style extension which has the feel of a dining area. The low ceilings give internal character and with bar access in all three rooms ,you can have a quiet drink in the snug or join the more lively area in the lounge, which is where the weekly quiz is held.I really like the way each room has its own focus and vibe,if only more pubs could keep Sky Sports from dominating the whole interior as is the case here.
The food is standard pub grub with 2 for 1 pricing, and there are four handpumps serving Mac's AK,IPA,Country Bitter (just OK) and seasonal Hopping Mad.Nothing to get excited about on the ale front.
However this is an oasis from the town centre clubs ,bars and dives .It may not be exceptional but for the area this is a decent pub with a friendly ,lively atmosphere.Quiz night was fun.
UPDATE
There has been a good internal refurb which has created a more contemporary and comfortable feel .The exterior seating is now a lot more upmarket as well. The handpump count is now down to three ,so expect a regular choice of three Mc Mullens brews, there will not be any guests. Two keg fonts for Rivertown Brewing beers, also a Mc Mullens brand.
