Recently reopened under new management, this previously decrepit Victorian pub has been refurbished and reinvigorated. There’s not much outside, and it’s right on the road, added to which the entrance is a bit uninviting. Once inside, however, it’s pleasant and welcoming. There is a dark blue colour scheme inside and out, which could be a bit oppressive, but the furniture is comfortable, there is a decent range of drinks, and the staff are enthusiastic. There are three main drinking areas around a central bar, a couple of TV screens and a woodburner in the original chimney. Three pumps on the bar, Twisted Three and Sixpence on one, GK IPA on the second, while Yardbird had just gone off the third. Blue Moon and Neck Oil were the craft offerings, plus a bank of European lagers alongside Guinness and two from Thatchers. Food was freshly cooked and good value, and it would be good to come back and try their Sunday roast. Of note is that they offer 15% discount to Blue Light card holders. Seems to be another pub rescued from the developers, so a good news story given the paucity of pubs this side of Bath.
