Apparently the oldest pub on the island of Mersey with bits of it allegedly dating back to the 13th Century and its cellar is reputedly haunted.
The pub looks quite attractive when you come towards the High street with its white and black beamed exterior. Although it’s not until you go to enter that you actually find that this section is actually a Tea room and the pub is the more boring bit of the building behind. It is unclear if this Tea room was originally part of the pub, but I believe so as there is a connecting door marked ‘public bar’ which is now not in use.
And on the lunchtime of Bank Holiday Monday the Tea room was doing significantly better business than the pub, which was virtually empty except for a couple of die hards in the saloon bar and when I poked my head in the plainer public side this was completely empty.
The long saloon was OK enough, albeit a bit dark. Two pumps on the bar but only one going with Woodfordes Wherry which was OK but nothing spectacular, and I can certainly see why the other two pubs down by the harbour attract the bigger crowds.
