A rather grubby back street boozer on what was once the main road past Twerton, now bypassed by the A36. Walking in, there was an aroma of boiled cabbage and stale sweat, and it was a relief when someone farted, which was like an air freshener by comparison. It’s a small Victorian pub with a single bar formed from knocking through the original ground floor rooms. There are hearths at both ends, the originals replaced with stone 1960s fireplaces. The décor was dated and the carpet filthy. There were large TVs at either end showing live sport. The bar staff were functional but not particularly friendly or pleasant, the locals definitely unwelcoming, and it felt like the set of a zombie film or a Dickensian novel (but not in a good or nostalgic way). There were 2 ales on, Doombar and Pride, neither in great condition. Definitely a local affair, I very much doubt I’ll ever come back here and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it for a crawl.
