Strongers . left this review about The United Brethren

The entrance of United Brethren, aka UB, opens into the bar area where a stool lined serving counter across the rear faces high tables along the front wall opposite. To the left of the bar is a mix of seating that is faced by a piano that sits against the left-hand wall. Away from the bar to the right are some sofas in the front window and an overflow beer shelf runs across the rear wall. On the wooden back bar, either side of a sign for the ‘Grub Truck’, are rails with available beer cards inserted, which I found odd because the fonts and hand pumps are on the bar. The long bar of premium and craft keg fonts is flanked by two pairs of hand pumps that were drawing Mauldon’s Silver Adder, which was ok, Three Brother’s The Bitter Ex and Brentwood’s Best. In a search for the toilet, I stumbled across another room at the rear and access to a beer garden under a large marquee out the back. For a trendy bar I thought this place was ok and I’d return if passing.

Quinno _ left this review about The United Brethren

Ferociously modernised place, painted top to bottom in an oppressive grey/blue colour with a modern wood bar back – too much for me, so I settled in the sizeable astroturf rear garden. Four cask offerings with two Mauldon, one Woodfordes and one from Chelmsford - Death of a Cowboy- which was certainly on life support, flabby and buttery (NBSS 2) served by a bored barmaid. Some interesting stuff on the keg with four genuinely foreign ones. I tried the Dinkelaker Privat and it was fresh so this is probably your best bet should you come here - I certainly wouldn’t bother with the cask, too many on and no real inclination to shift it either.

Blue Scrumpy left this review about United Brethren

The United Brethren (UB) is tucked away on a side street, just off Moulsham Street. It has a fairly modern feel, with sofas being quite popular.

2 real ales were on - Chelmsford Blueshack Radio Wave & Adnams Southwold Bitter. Two of our party tried the Blueshack Radio Wave, which was quite clearly off and returned. I opted for the Hush Heath Jake's Kentish Cider from a keg, in its place. The drinks were changed without argument, but the pumpclip was not turned round.

Shortly after, a local wandered in and asked to try the same beer. He came to the same conclusion as us and asked to try the Adnams - same result. At this point, the landlord became apparent, tried the Adnams and declared it off. When prompted by us, he also tried the Chelmsford beer and agreed again that it was also off! So, all was well that ended well. I ended up with a new cider for me that I hadn't initially spotted and nobody else had to endure the 2 dodgy ales!

Real Ale Ray left this review about United Brethren

A busy pub for food this one, with the kitchen situated right behind the bar. Staff friendly, but knowing a good pint of Woodfordes Wherry when I see it, this beer was dead in the water and was tasteless. Should have returned it, but I was on a mission so left it - hopefully that's letting them know.

Fairly large single bar pub that usually does a very good pint of Woodfordes Wherry.
