Simple two room boozer towards the top end of the Laines area. On our visit, only the left-hand bar was open, so I was unable to explore what appears to be a roughly mirror-image room to the right. The place has quite a nice, relaxed, warm vibe to it with some traditional stylings and a mix of furniture. The bar is to the right and dominates this wall, sporting an attractive counter and mirrored bar back. Décor is a bit limited, but there are plenty of odds and ends that indicate that the pub offers a safe space for members of the LGBTQ community. Sadly, it wasn’t a safe space for the three people sat at the bar attempting to complete their daily Wordle (remember that?), as having enlisted our help, they ended up failing to get the word, putting an end to their 300-day winning streak – many apologies if you happen to be reading this! It didn’t look like the pub had a beer garden, but there are a couple of mini tables and stools nailed to the front wall, which allow you to sit pavement-side and enjoy some great people watching.
On the bar, there are three handpulls which were clipped with Harveys Sussex Best (twice) and Dark Star Hophead. I gave the latter a try and it seemed fine, other than perhaps being a little too warm. The barmaid was super friendly, as were the clientele, although it was very quiet on our midweek evening visit and I think they closed up for the night not long after we left.
I thought this was a tidy little pub which makes for a comfy bolthole that is much more peaceful than a lot of the pubs around the Laines and station area. Although things are pretty basic and the beer range is about as atypical as you can get in Brighton, it left a good impression, and I wasn’t complaining when a friend brought me here a few months later.

The Brighton Tavern has two bars and the first I visited was the busier left hand side where there is a fireplace with some seating and the bar that supports three hand pumps. One of them was unused and the other two were drawing Harveys best in accompaniment to the standard draught products and San Miguel. The right hand side back bar has a couple of steps down and is basically a room with more seating that is available for hire. This is a gay pub with the rainbow colours in the window, but I wouldn’t have noticed except for the pink lighting and the unobservant gay barmen making me wait for an age by the gay magazines whilst they flounced behind the bar. There is a plasma screen that was off and unsurprisingly there were no Sky Sports advertisements that I noticed.

The Guinness was good, but I can’t see a return visit.
