Currently one of GK’s Old English Inns chain, this thatched country pub sits just off the main A31 and has a large car park, a pleasant garden and a children’s play area. Once inside there are several discrete bar areas, primarily aimed at diners. There is a small public bar to the right with flagged floor, an overloud tv and a gaming machine, a second public bar at the back with floorboards and more gaming machines, a small dining room in the centre which, for some reason, has a cash machine, and a large light, airy dining area wrapped around the far end which gives a pleasant view over the adjacent fields. The only place where there are comfortable seats is next to a large central open fire where as many as two people can sit and drink in comfort. Food is basic formulaic fare, although they do theme nights where specials – curry, steak and so on – are offered as part of a meal deal. There is WiFi available, and dogs are welcomed. Staff were very pleasant and welcoming, but the pub was a little too cold to be completely comfortable. Four ales on, I had the guest, Flack’s Double Drop, which was in reasonable condition. It’s fine to eat if travelling or for a casual drink, but the low ambient temperature and lack of comfortable seating make it less attractive as an evening venue.
