A very pleasant village pub as described below. At first look its large car park and strange decking arrangement, with its rather odd instructions for booking, at the front give the impression of a chain pub aimed at the tourist trade, but once inside you realise this is not the case. The single large bar is part carpeted, part floorboarded and is open plan, formed from conjoining the front rooms. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the locals were happy to chat with us at length. Food was good value pub grub, and they additionally offer curry nights and other themed events. Cask ales on were Cnut from Cerne Abbas, Otter Amber and Butcombe Original. The keg choices were Tarka Four, Madri, Guinness, Alpacalypse, Peroni, Otter Black, Sharp’s Atlantic, Doombar and an unrecognisable cider. Well worth a visit if in the area, and certainly a better bet than some nearby pubs.

A decent sized village pub built from Portland stone, with a traditional interior and a lovely garden which has a stream running through it. Amongst the drinks offerings, four hand pumps offered Greene King IPA and Doombar; Ringwood Best had just finished on the third, and the fourth had a reversed Butcombe Mendip Spring clip on it. The friendly barman/landlord wasn’t quite sure whether the Mendip Spring was ready yet, but pulled it through for us and it was delicious. I gather the food is very good here, and the menu looked interesting, though we didn’t get a chance to eat here. This pub had a really solid feel to it – taking trouble to get everything right – I’d very happily drop in again for a drink or to try the food.
