As described by Peter, below. We were warmly greeted by the staff who were, understandably, a bit fed up with the awful dirge that was being belted out by a tone-deaf lady backed by two inept guitar slayers, which had been billed as ‘live music’. We were invited to go through to the back bar which was much quieter, definitely friendlier, though there was a residual hazard from the odd stray dart. The locals were a good bunch, and the various militaria around the walls made for interesting discussion. There is, apparently, a skittle alley and a garden, but we didn’t get to see either. The ales were in excellent condition – Butcombe Original and Doombar supported by Stan’s Cider. The keg range was limited to Madri, Guinness, Inch’s Cider plus a couple we didn’t note. It’s a bit of a climb up from the Harbour, but it’s worth the effort for the company and the beer, and it’s grockle free.

The Chapelhay Tavern is situated up the steep Chapelhay steps over Weymouth bridge but perhaps a more less energetic approach is from the Brewers Quay area.
This is a 2 bar pub with an interesting collection of nautical miscellanea and other oddments covering the walls.Although this is not a large pub there is a long slender room on the left side known as "skittle alley"with the pub being a member of the Weymouth and Portland Skittle league.
There were 3 cask beers on the go on my early evening visit with the Ringwood 49er on top form.At the rear of the building is a smart floral compact beer garden where I think on occasions in summer live music is performed.
Liked this one which had a friendly landlord, well conditioned cask beer and not overrun by tourists. Definitely worth seeking out
