A large hotel/B&B and restaurant on the old market square, currently owned by Hall and Woodhouse. There are wooden floors, plenty of exposed brick, timbers and architectural character. There is a brick bread oven at one end, and there are open fires. A gaming machine and a dartboard are present but were not in use when we visited. The clientele were mostly families and older diners. Furniture is a bit 'theme park' and not particularly comfortable. The staff were not very friendly and refused to serve one of our number with alcohol as, despite her being 20 years old, she couldn't prove her age. Food was not as good as it should have been. There were three ales on draft and a few bottled. I had a pint of Brewer's Bee which was in extremely good condition, one of our party had tea which was served grudgingly and tasted disgusting. Worth including in a crawl for its beer quality but the dull atmosphere and lack of welcome from the staff lets it down.
