One of two recent opening on Clevedon’s Old Church Road, this one isn’t really a traditional pub, although it’s difficult to put my finger on exactly what I would class it as. It’s not really one of those all-day café/bar type places, despite many tables being laid up for food, and it didn’t strike me as a music venue, even though there is apparently a DJ on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Décor wise it’s quite traditional in a way with old wooden boards on the floor and several areas of exposed brickwork. In fact it looks as though two former shop units have been knocked together, which much of the original separating wall stripped back and left in place, thus dividing the venue in to a larger left hand half, and a much smaller right hand section. The remaining walls had very dark green paintwork, and this extended to the ceiling as well. A couple of art deco style chandeliers were on the ceiling, although the large arched windows at the front let in plenty of natural light, and this was a decent enough spot to sit and watch the world go by. Seating was mixture of fitted banquettes, regular tables and chairs, and some high chairs to the right. A tiled bar counter was at the rear, but overall, there was really little of any note, unless you count the grand piano that I spotted off to the right. Food options are currently limited to the ubiquitous small plates (although these did sound quite appealing), and, somewhat randomly, doughnuts.
Unfortunately, there were no real ales on tap, just Goose Island IPA on keg. The solitary cider was Orchard Pig Reveller. Overall, I didn’t dislike it here, and I may perhaps pop back to try the food, but it’s not somewhere I’ll make a point of returning to for a drink.
