Happy to agree with the late, great Ray. There are parts of South Normanton that look like they've seen better days, so having this as an option is like a combined Christmas and Birthday present. A shop conversion with five cask ales, all local: Abbeydale Steadfast Stout, Beermats Razzmatazz, Blue Monkey Infinity Plus 1, Marble The Great Bear and Lincoln Green Hood, the Blue Monkey a chewy delight at £3.90 for a superbly-kept 5.6% 'strong golden IPA'. Decor remains the same as a year ago, accompanied by 80s tunes on my brief visit. I was struggling a bit after a late dinner then a 20-minute yomp from my hotel to seek this place out, so didn't do the Blue Monkey justice nor get a chance to try any of the other beers, which all all appealed. I had to make do with the Mondrian-esque stained glass which covers the lower halves of the front windows.

This micropub is an oasis in this beer desert area, it is also a bit of a hike from Alfreton Railway Station. It was worth the effort as this is a welcoming micro, with a relaxed atmosphere and the beer prices were cheap for such well kept beers, the cheapest beer was £3.30. The interior consisted of two rooms, a front lounge area with pale blue painted walls and a tartan red and brown carpet. The back room had a decent sized pine bar over on the left and a tiled floor.
Five handpumps on including three from Thornbridge; Pink Grapefruit Jaipur, Strong Dark Mild & Big Ozzy IPA, Dancing Duck 22 Best Bitter and Welbeck Abbey Courage on High. Also 4 ciders in here. A decent micro.
