Brewhouse & Kitchen is in a very high-ceilinged rectangular space with lots of copper brewing equipment that was hissing away up the left-hand wall during a recent Thursday afternoon visit. Along the front wall is a dark blue banquette with tables that face centrally located high tables and two flights of stairs, there’s not a lot of seating due to the layout. In the right wall is a door to the Anne Knight suite that is a seating / function area up the right-hand side of the building. The attractive counter with big beer board above on the back bar is found on the rear wall, lots of craft beers are available, some from the house brewery and some not. The three hand pumps were drawing their own The Coach (ok but citrus), Capital Session IPA and Whisky Stout. The stairs lead up to a mezzanine and balcony with open plan seating areas with high tables at the front and rear that are connected by booths up the left and right walls. There was some background music playing, but no other distractions were spotted. This is a pub chain that I should really like, and I do think this building and the layout is impressive, but these pubs just feel a little too corporate for me.

With the almost adjacent Railway apparently preferring to serve regulars rather than visitors, I gave this chain another chance (outlets in Bournemouth having failed to impress). I was fortunate in finding not just a £3.50 Happy Hour offer on the cask ale in operation, but that the pint (a Session IPA) was the match for any on the day. The bar supports 3 pumps serving up the in-house, as well as one of those brass keg founts housing 8 taps, also with B&K brews. There were plenty of seats available, with the outside proving popular.
I may not have got a complete pint, but the price and quality couldn't be faulted, nor could the readiness to actually serve a customer, so I'd certainly be happy to return (the Railway not so much).
