I got a bit lost on my way here and somehow found myself in a foodbank and soup kitchen under a railway arch around the corner, thankfully I worked out that I’d taken a wrong turn before I started demanding to know where the bar was. There were no issues finding the counter in the Indian Brewery because it runs the length of the right-hand wall where six keg beers and two keg ciders were available alongside three cask options which were Indian Summer, IPA and Royal Beast. Opposite the counter are long benches and tables akin to a food or beer hall, which I thought was the general vibe, unlike the Ken & Chickens that feels like a proper pub. The left-hand side feels more geared just towards dining with the kitchen overlooking the tables and chairs from the rear. I thought the staff were friendly and this is on my radar for a food stop off when next in the area, but I’ll not be going just for a beer again.

I'd passed this place on a Saturday lunchtime visit to Hockley earlier this year, when it had been heaving. I vowed to return at the time and finally made it back yesterday evening. However, this was a far quieter Monday evening.
The 3 bar staff looked a little bored and fairly uninterested. The one guy tried to tell me something about the beer selection, which was listed on a blackboard near the entrance. But I couldn't understand him at first. It soon became apparent that one of the two cask ales listed was off, when I attempted to order it. One of their 5 or 6 craft beers was also off. As such, I chose the solitary remaining real ale, which was the Indian Brewery IPA. Most of the craft beers were also their own.
The interior is quite interesting, with plenty of references to India. Indian food is served from an open kitchen at the far left-hand side and it smelt very appealing. That was more than I could say about the IPA, which was fairly insipid.
I'd hoped for much more from this place, but it really did not live up to my expectations. So, it wasn't long until we upped sticks and headed to a tried and tested establishment that is one of our favourites in the city - the Wellington.

As noted, it is situated under the railway arches on Snow Hill Station. Not much extra I can add to previous review. The 3 cask ale taps I couldn't see but the 15 Crafty Taps are along the wall to the window side of the bar. Only 5 of the taps seemed to be on and the 3 cask ales were and were fine. Very pleasant smell of Indian food, if you like that sort of thing.
