Visited on a Friday afternoon in July. I think I was the first customer in just after midday opening. 6 cask ales available and first impressions were that this is an example of the 1936 Pub Co doing what they do well. It looks old and pubby, but is it just an illusion with this chain? The front room has bare boards and a nice fireplace, which looked like it had been used recently with burnt logs and ash underneath. There are copper topped tables, plus a couple of high chairs at the window with a drinking shelf, though I think it would certainly be a bit cosy trying to use those seats when all the tables are occupied. There was a random game of Jenga on the side.

Through to the bar area, this also has bare boards, with high seating. There are a couple of tables on the pavement to the front, and more of a beer garden to the rear, that looked to be something of a suntrap.

There is a further room upstairs, as are the toilets. The stairway up looks decorated in the style of a museum home from the industrial revolution.

Service was friendly and I really liked this one.

A total change of interior from my last visit, the upper floor is now made over as “ye olde englyshe pubbe”. A scintillating décor of old wood, copper topped tables, old prints, board floors, brown painted walls, pews and casks. The place stinks of candles which are everywhere. The counter is to the right and supports six pulls and two low T-bars with casks from Weetwood, Blacklodge, Ossett, Nepture, Taylors and Vocation, so plenty of choice in brewer and style. Sadly the default half is a handled mug, this appears to be a thing with the 1936 PubCo who run this and other nearby pubs. It has a conservatory and a sunken garden at the rear. Upstairs and cellar were not explored, I believe the upstairs has toilets. Yes it’s fake and a pastiche but well done and I rather liked the place.

Liverpool is really a special place for the pub tourist. This is unheralded by camra (never seen it in the guide for the last few years) yet I found it on a pub crawl app. The title of the pub crawl was "Top 10 Real Ale Pubs in Liverpool". Camra may not know but the locals certainly do.

It doesnt look too much from the outside - although the Georgian archiecture is fine. Inside, it has a well worn, timeless feel. Looking at the reviews here, it seems as though this a retro-fit - but they couldnt have done a better job.

Multi roomed, with a lovely sun trap beer garden.

Beer wise - half a dozen cask on and I was impressed with a first Baltic Best Bitter by the Black Lodge Brewery (Liverpoo).

Another favourite and well worth popping in.
